PCB Layout

PCB layout

Process of PCB layout design

Create the Schematic Blueprint
Creating a comprehensive schematic is the first step in making a PCB layout. A schematic is like a blueprint for an electronic product. Hence, it is important that we make schematics with extreme care. Hence, we use the following considerations for making a PCB layout.

  • The components are suitable and complement each other.
  • The connections between different components are well established.
  • Different groups of components have different representations within a schematic.

Complex PCB layout often requires that we revert to hierarchical schematics. Adopting the hierarchical approach allows us to make our led PCB layout more organized.
Import the schematic to a CAD tool
Once the schematic is complete, we have to refine it and convert it into a proper PCB layout. For this purpose, we have to select and use a suitable Computer Aided Design (CAD) tool. At MOKO Technology we only use the best and most sophisticated tools available. Our engineers then import the schematic into their selected CAD tool. They then modify and make necessary changes to make the schematic adjust in the CAD workspace.
Finalize the PCB Layout
Our engineers then rigorously work on it and convert it into a proper PCB layout. For this purpose, they follow standard practices and advanced techniques. Once they are done, they have a working electronic layout. The further review it to incorporate additional features to meet the needs and requirements of our clients.
Simulation and Improvement
It is often necessary to make sure that the theoretical layout will work the same way when we practically implement it. So, if we make a prototype for every theoretical layout to gauge its performance then the process will become very expensive. Hence, this is not feasible. Therefore, we tend to rely on a great technique known as simulation. We use advanced and latest tools to simulate working conditions and check the performance of our theoretical layout. This allows us to get valuable feedback from a virtual workspace and make improvements in our layout. Hence, this method of simulation is very economical, practical, and above all feasible. Additionally, this also gives us a chance to perform design optimization in Realtime.

Tips on PCB layout

Size Constraints
When we are dealing with a high speed PCB layout, the most important constraint is the size of the PCB board. Hence, designers and engineers should sit together to come up with optimal size. They also need to agree on a suitable width to length ratio.

One must make sure that the PCB is not too small. This is because the components will not fit in and the PCB will experience overheating. One must also make sure that the PCB is not too large. This is because it will lose its portability and you will face difficulty in carrying it.
Maximum Temperature
It is mainly dependent on the type of PCB you use. However, the general rule is that a PCB should not experience a temperature higher than 170 Celsius. For this purpose, you will have to rely on software that can perform the thermal simulation.
Heat dissipation
We mostly make PCB boards with copper and fiberglass. This is because the thermal conduction of copper is excellent. Hence, we can use it as a heatsink for disposing of the extra amount of heat. We can achieve this by placing a layer of copper under the components. After that, we use vias for making connections and to play the role of active thermal conduction points. Hence, this will allow us to perform effective heat dissipation.
Traces
The length of a trace is very important. So, you must ensure that you use short traces. Having a short trace will allow you to control the impedance especially in the case of signals with high frequency.
Ground plane
We must make sure that the ground planes are safe from any interruption. This is because if you break the ground plane then the returning current can change its path on the opposite layer. So, you may face unnecessary EMI problems especially in the case of signals with a high amplitude.
Differential signals
These signals have the same amplitude and frequency but they have opposite polarity. We use them for reducing distortion and noise which might arise during communication. You can fully harness the functionality of differential signals by routing them with the traces. You also need to make sure that they have the same distance and length from the respective ground plane. Hence, you can ensure that every path has the same impedance.
Components placement
Component placement is another important parameter that you need to consider. So, if you are dealing with a double layer PCB then you need to place the heavy components on the top layer. In this case, the top layer is the one that will permanently stay up in the final electronic product. Hence, you can reduce mechanical stress which might arise in respective solder joints of the electronic components. You also need to ensure that you don’t place relatively heavy electronic components on the edges of the PCB. You should rather place them in the middle of the board to avoid any bending. Placing the heavy components on the edges can also lead to distortion in the solder joints of some electronic components.
