Do ICs have a shelf life?

What I would like to know is if ICs also have a limited shelf life and if so, do some types suffer more than others?

They do age on the shelf, hoewel, but generally not as fast as when in use. What happens is you have a rising probability of ICs being dead when unpackaged, or dying earlier when used. Several aspects degrade the ICs over time.

  • Oxidation
  • radiation (both natural and man-made)
  • chemical degradation of the dielectric

The effect of these influences largely depends on the manufacturing process and the quality of the IC. A well-made IC may be less prone to oxidation, bijvoorbeeld. Older ICs (aka larger structures) have more material to be eaten away. Some ICs have dielectrics than can be more prone to aging. Modern ICs seem to be built with thinner, but more robust dielectrics.

How can I fix the PCB to the mechanical structure?

I designed a PCB with an imaging sensor that is mechanically coupled to a lens assembly using four 2-56 schroeven. I’m noticing that even though the screws are holding the board tightly against the mechanical structure if I flick or lightly knock the the assembly the imagemoves”. I’m hoping to get a few suggestions for ways to fix the PCB to the mechanical structure. Any suggestions for adhesives or the like? Something else?

Is aluminium foil a good substitute for kapon tape when soldering?

I want to desolder a tiny surface mount button from the motherboard of a phone. There are a lot of similarly tiny components surrounding it that I do not want to damage with heat from the soldering iron. Can I use aluminium foil in lieu of kapton tape to protect these components?
