Can I use LEDs without PCB?

I recently purchased LEDs on ebay that were supposed to come attached to star PCB (as a heat sink). The items I received are just the LEDs (no PCB). They are listed as 3W LEDs, with a forward voltage of 3.0-3.4V, and current at 700mA.Will I damage/destroy the LEDs if I use them without a heat sink? Als niet, what is the best way to mount these to preserve their life during operation?

If you received actual 3W LEDs and were to run them at 3.5V, 700 mA without a heatsink, then yes, you will sooner-rather-than-later kill them.

You have three options.

  1. Run them at a lower voltage/current.
  2. Heat sink them, perhaps improvised out of some aluminum bar stock and metal epoxy (Home Depot)
  3. Buy star PCB heat sinks and assemble them yourself.

What are possible solutions to PCB warpage problems?

My PCB manufacturer just informed me that he is facing PCB warpage issue in my simple, single sided, copper poured PCB. He says to avoid this issue he suggests to add a dummy copper patch by keeping 3mm copper clearance from all sides. Can somebody tell me what leads to this issue and what are possible solutions to this problem ?

What is the proper zero orientation for a SMT LED?

According to IPC-7351, the cathode should be on the left for a molded diode. Echter, when I use component wizard of my suppliers to create a diode, it places the cathode (K) on the right. Does it depend on the manufacturer? How does the assembly house know which way is correct?
