Are SMT components bad for high voltage applications?

Many assembly factories are asking for SMT jobs, while I think through hole would be a better option for a high voltage application. Before the high voltage project is started, we need to make a call on SMT or Through hole parts. Is there a study on this?

Firstly, check whether your PCB is high voltage. Generally speaking, high voltage is defined as starting at 1000V.

That being said, there is absolutely nothing wrong in general with using surface-mount parts in a device running at these voltages, so long as the parts you are using are rated for voltages you are using them at. Keep in mind as well that you do not need to make a single decision between SMT and through-hole parts. You can mix and match both within a single design.

Is solder mask a valid electrical insulator?

There is a copper pour over the entire top of the my PCB, which is part of GND net. It turns out that the surface mounted 1W LEDs I’m going to use have the heat slug connected internally to the LED’s +ve terminal. Can I rely on the solder mask to insulate the +ve voltage (~3V ish) from GND? Long term?

What equipment is used by professional PCB manufacturers?

This month we plan to find a proper suppliers to produce PCB for our new products, a healthcare watch. One of our supplier assessment items is about production equipment, which I know few about them. Can you share some common equipment which professional factory may use?

How can I electrically isolate a PCB from a heat sink?

I have a set of LED driving lights for motorcycle that must be wired through a ground-leg pulse width modulation dimmer. The problem is the mounting bracket for the lights is grounded, so the lamp shorts to ground through the motorcycle chassis and the PWM dimmer cant dim the lamps. How do I handle this problem?
