What is the importance of a ground plane of a PCB?

I find that the all types of PCB samples from my suppliers have ground planes. It seems important and I want to know about its function.

Very important. Once the signal gets into the ground plane from the circuit, there will be a ripple. Ripple may spread and influence the signal in other circuits.
If we don’t have a ground plane, the ripple will last longer and may influence other circuits nearby.

What Others Are Asking

When should I choose 2 layer PCB or 4 layer PCB?

Our brand was focused on common electronic product with single PCB. And this year, we plan to develop a smart range which may require multiple layer PCB. Want to know more about 2 layer PCB or 4 layer PCB.

How can I connect my small PCB with sensor to the bigger PCB?

My small PCB is mounting a very sensitive fragile sensor on the top surface that has to be wire bonded to the PCB, so I am trying to design a smaller PCB that can be surface mounted to the bigger PCB. How can I get some kind of thin footprint for interconnecting the two PCB boards?

How can I solder an SMD component with a pad on the bottom?

I am getting a PCB manufactured for a project that I am working on. One of the parts, the A4950 motor driver, has a “pad” on the bottom, which is meant to be soldered to GND of the PCB for thermal dissipation. I was thinking about the prototyping, and I am unsure how I would go about (using a soldering iron), soldering the pad on the bottom.
